The Canon HG10 camcorder is designed to be compatible with the AVCHD codec. It is based on the Canon HV20, but its design departs substantially from the old model. The HG10 is much lighter than the HV20 and weighs slightly less than its main competitor, the Sony Handycam HDR-SR7.
The HG10 camcorder has a body more higher than the SR7 and therefore easier to hold. However, the SR7 is a more modern and elegant than the HG10. To achieve a slimmer body, Canon relocated and changed the way many of the controls. Some changes were for the better, as the eye level viewfinder that is extensible and the toggle switch for the zoom. However, the change direction with concentric scroll wheel is a bit difficult to use. While it is better than using a touch screen, manual focus and navigation are more difficult because there is also a tendency to move the scroll wheel when using the switch. You'll also be using the screen to shoot LCD more often.
The HG10 has a three megapixel CMOS captures images at 1920 by 1080 HD video that is interlaced and converted in 1440 by 1,080 resolution for AVCHD. Supplied with a 40-gigabyte hard drive that can hold 15 hours of video from 5 Mbps to as low as 5.5 hours of video from 15 Mbps De three-megapixel photos are possible while the camera is in photo mode. Grab video are also possible in the resolution of 1,920 by 1,080, while the device is in movie mode. It should be noted here that the photographs can only be saved in a miniSD card and no hard disk.
The HG10 is capable of taking sharp pictures and videos that are saturated and well exposed. However, the microphone has no zoom capability and has a poor collection of sounds.
