Can the JVC GZ-MG130U hard drive camcorder is also used as a web cam?
I have a JVC GZ-mg130u new hard disk camcorder. Used have a MiniDV camera that could be related to the computer and used as a webcam too. I can not seem to find this feature in the menu once the camera is connected, or discard it. Does anyone have this camera and whether you can double as a webcam? Thank you!
When connected the computer via USB, the camera only acts as an external hard drive to allow transfer of video files to the computer. To my knowledge, this camcorder not designed for streaming video through the USB port – hence can not be used as a webcam in this way. However, if your computer has an entry AV, may be able to use the camera as a webcam by connecting the AV output from the camcorder to the input of AV equipment.

MiniDV: Since its launch in 1966 miniDV has become the standard format for consumers and users semi-professional video camera and remains the standard other formats are judged. The tape format for better quality picture and PCM stereo CD quality and can record 60 minutes at best quality.
Camcorders MiniDV tapes using approximately the same size as a box of matches. This has enabled manufacturers of video cameras over the years, to reduce the size video camera for this "pocket size".
Recorded images can be transferred from a miniDV camcorder to three different ways. First, as an analog signal using composite AV lead compounds, secondly as an S-video analog signal, and finally a DV signal.
The DV signals are transferred using the DV output port, also known as FireWire or i.LINK IEEE1394 and also connected to your computer via a Firewire cable. By transferring the footage of this method is no loss of image quality and audio and this is what makes this format so popular.
Almost all MiniDV camcorders have a DV output port and will have a better quality DV-in port to transfer edited material back to the camcorder. Although other formats are gaining popularity in miniDV still has plenty of life ahead still and video camera are good value for money.
DVD: DVD is increasing in popularity and gain a bigger slice of the market since its introduction in mid 2001. The main advantage of DVD camcorders is convenience. Record your pictures on disk, remove it and play it on the DVD player without wires or connections.
DVD camcorders use 8 cm discs in a variety of recording formats. DVD-R disc is a single-use, compatible with all DVD players and used by all manufacturers of video cameras. DVD-RAM is a rewritable disc offered in camera editing and with the support of Hitachi and Panasonic. DVD-/ + RW is another rewritable format and is supported by Sony.
Originally there were problems compatibility with DVD players, but most DVD players now play a variety of discs and some camcorders offer the ability to format Multiple making them more flexible.
DVD video performance has greatly improved since its introduction, but still has drawbacks. The discs can be recorded only 18 minutes of the best video quality and editing is not as easy as miniDV, but to facilitate the use of the DVD format is a good choice.
Hard drive: hard drive is the latest format to be used in video cameras. Originally introduced by JVC, but now promoted by other manufacturers. Hard drives are now as large as 30 GB and can store 35 hours in standard recording mode and up to seven hours in best quality mode.
Camcorders HDD are still to match the quality of MiniDV camcorders, but its performance is impressive and will undoubtedly be even better. With almost no moving parts HDD camcorders are very compact and could well substitute as the main format miniDV.
An obvious lack of video cameras with hard drive is once the hard drive is full images must be downloaded or written over. This can be a big problem unless you are on vacation for some time and away from your computer.
Memory card: Camcorder manufacturers have been providing a function of digital photographs with their video cameras for some time. Still images are recorded on a memory card of one kind or another, that fit into a card slot on your camcorder. The cameras are now being offered these video images recording on memory cards
The 1GB memory cards are normally only fill up quickly so even though the video is stored in MPEG4 format high compression. A good supply of cards are needed for any long recording. However, this format is suitable for transmission to the Internet or send e-mail. Due to compression of the image quality is inferior to other formats.
The video stored on the Memory Stick or card Memory camcorders are generally the smallest type on the market and are convenient as a handheld video camera. Ongoing development has already been formatted MPEG2 video camcorders used by DVD and HDD. The SDHC card has recently been developed offers sizes up to 32MB.
